HAWKNet provided active virtual workspaces for regional and sub-regional activities including hosting and managing online discussions as well as an online repository of knowledge on activities within the sub region. The network supported public and private mailing lists working on international conferences including The Great Lakes Region Conference on Peace, Security and Development held in December 2004; Women’s Preparatory Conference on the Regional Beijing+10 processes held in Kigali, Rwanda in October 2004.
HAWKNet also supported the development of a regional website and virtual market place for products and services by women and women’s organizations. This included an online database of African women experts in various fields and a global online discussion forum for women.
The initiative was supported by the United Nations Fund for Women (UNIFEM) and the Young Christian Women’s Association (YWCA).
