Program Aim

The overall goal of the ISWC program is to increase employability prospects and income generating capacities of 5,000 high potentials and disadvantaged young women aged between 18 and 35 years from urban informal settlements and rural Kenya. Equipping them with digital literacy skills using the Intel She Will Connect Digital Literacy Curriculum, online work, life, and entrepreneurship skills. Those skills are necessary for engaging and succeeding in online work and entrepreneurial ventures. Once trained the young women are linked to online job platforms such as UpWork from where they engage in online work as a way of employment. Those seeking entrepreneurship pathways are supported to access start-up capital and businesses including the government’s e-procurement portal to bid for the 30% government tenders set aside for youth and women

solution

Our Approach

Key program activities to be implemented under the sustainability training will include the mobilization and recruitment of the young women to participate in the project; training of the young women; connecting the young women to mentors for post-training /mentorship support; participating in project review meetings. The training will be delivered over a period of two weeks (10 days) with the first week focusing on Digital Literacy skills while the second week focuses on Online work training. Digital literacy skills training is key to the project to ensure that all youth participating in the program achieve a certain level of competency working with a computer before they can engage in online work training. For job placements, the young women were linked to online job platforms such as UpWork from where they engaged in online work as a way of employment. Those seeking entrepreneurship pathways were supported to access start-up capital and businesses including the government’s e-procurement portal to bid for the 30% government tenders set aside for youth and women.

How our work brought about success

Rukia Juma Testimonial

Through the training, I have acquired advanced digital skills, one of my skills that has really stood out is my typing speed which is a record 48 words per minute and this has earned me short contracts from time to time. I encourage young women to pursue their passion because this is the key to prosperity.

Mary Mitchelle Testimonial

Since the training, I live on a different scale of life. I have been able to create an email address that allows me to communicate with friends, and even send job applications to different counties in Kenya. What is more rewarding is the ability to use google search to get knowledge and this has enabled me to learn a lot. I aspire to be a detective, and I believe technology will play a big role in solving crimes.
