The Digital Services in Agriculture project addresses this urgent issue by advocating for comprehensive stakeholder engagement and support.
The Power of Stakeholder Engagement
The policy brief underscores the importance of bringing together a diverse range of stakeholders—platform providers, internet service providers, digital skills trainers, local content creators, and policymakers—to create a cohesive strategy for digital agricultural transformation. Each stakeholder plays a critical role:
- Platform Providers ensure that digital agricultural services are user-friendly and accessible, even in areas with limited internet connectivity. They are encouraged to develop platforms with offline functionalities and interfaces that cater to the needs of smallholder farmers.
- Internet Service Providers are vital in extending affordable and reliable internet access to rural and underserved areas. Their involvement is crucial in closing the connectivity gap that hinders smallholder farmers from accessing digital content.
- Digital Skills Trainers provide the necessary education and resources to empower farmers with the skills they need to effectively use digital tools. This training is essential for farmers to fully benefit from the available digital agricultural services.
- Local Content Creators play a pivotal role in developing digital content that is culturally relevant and tailored to the specific needs of smallholder farmers. This ensures that the information is not only accessible but also applicable to their unique contexts.
- Policymakers are tasked with creating an enabling environment that supports digital inclusion in agriculture. This includes developing policies that incentivize stakeholder collaboration, ensuring that digital agricultural services are accessible, affordable, and beneficial to all smallholder farmers.

The policy brief from the Digital Services in Agriculture project is a clarion call for action.
